Spider Monkeys are arboreal. New World monkeys like the spider monkey are more primitive than old world monkeys. They have slender bodies and limbs with long narrow hands.
Spider monkeys grow quite large. Adult monkeys can grow up to 35 – 65 cm, excluding the tail. They have long arms and they have a powerful, prehensile tail that can act as an extra hand or foot. It is very sensitive. They can pick up objects with their tail. They are extremely agile and so they can swing fast from branch to branch.They are unusual monkeys because they have only four fingers and no thumb. Spider monkeys like to hang upsidedown with all four limbs and the tail holding on to branches which makes them look like a spider. That is why it is called the Spider Monkey. Their fur color can be black, brown, golden, red, or tan.
